Why Timing Matters
Pre-weaning vaccination has long been a cornerstone of preconditioning programs. Giving calves their respiratory vaccines (covering viruses like BRSV, IBR, PI3, and BVD) roughly a month before weaning, with a booster near weaning time, gives their immune systems a head start before the stress of separation hits.
What to Keep in Mind
- First-time vaccines need lead time. If this is the calf's first respiratory vaccine, give it at least two weeks before weaning. The immune system needs time to respond before the calf faces the stress of weaning, and the more lead time, the better.
- Don't skip the booster window. The booster timing on the label (usually 3–4 weeks after the first dose) is when you get the best immune response. Stick to that schedule even if it doesn't line up perfectly with your new weaning date.
- Calves vaccinated at branding have more flexibility. A booster dose triggers a faster immune response than an initial dose does, so boostering at or just before weaning still works well for calves that already got a first shot earlier in the year.
The Bottom Line
Killed vaccines, modified-live intranasal vaccines, and MLV vaccines have all been shown to protect calves as young as a couple of months old. As always, loop in your veterinarian on the specifics for your operation, since timing can vary by product and by your herd's risk factors.
