A cutting needle has at least 2, opposing, cutting edges because the point is usually triangular. Cutting needles are designed for penetration through dense, irregular, and relatively thick tissues. They are ideal for skin sutures. Conventional cutting needles have 3 cutting edges arranged in a triangle. The third cutting edge is on the inner or concave curvature. Reverse cutting needles are the same as a conventional cutting needle except the third cutting edge is on the outside or convex curvature. These needles are stronger than conventional cutting needles and have a lower chance of cutting through the edge of the tissue. They are designed for tough tissues but are also beneficial for cosmetic and ophthalmic surgery because by cutting they cause minimal trauma. The taper cut needle combines the reverse cutting design at the point with a round shaft that is useful in delicate fibrous tissue. Side cutting needles have two cutting edges on each side of the needle and flat convex and concave surfaces. This maximizes passage through tissues while minimizing trauma. The special K needle is similar to the taper cut needle but with a shorter and stronger cutting tip making it useful in tough dense tissues such as cartilage.
